What is wound care?

Wound care involves treating hard-to-heal skin wounds. It goes way beyond normal home care for wounds. At Specialized Foot and Ankle Care, the team of foot and ankle experts provides the most advanced healing treatments in three New Jersey offices.

The main goals of wound care are to prevent the wound from getting worse and stimulate healing as quickly as possible. This helps patients avoid severe complications and greatly reduces the risk of toe or foot amputation.

What causes poor healing of wounds?

Skin wounds develop for several reasons, but diabetes is the most common. Between 15% and 25% of people with diabetes develop nonhealing foot wounds (ulcers).

People with diabetes often suffer from neuropathy, in which nerve damage causes foot numbness, tingling, or burning sensations.

Numbness is particularly common with neuropathy. It causes people with diabetes to miss injuries. A small cut or abrasion on the bottom of the foot can quickly grow much worse. Poor circulation is also common in people with diabetes and slows healing.

Other conditions, like circulatory disorders, can also lead to poor wound healing. For instance, peripheral artery disease (PAD) causes the arteries in the legs to narrow. This means your legs and feet don’t get adequate blood, which slows healing.

What is the wound healing process?

The Specialized Foot and Ankle Care team develops personalized wound care plans for every patient. The cause of your wound, age, budget, and other factors determine your proper wound-healing treatment. Some standard approaches to wound healing are:

  • Topical treatments: applying topical products like antibacterial solutions
  • Wound debridement: removal of dead tissue using chemicals or surgical tools
  • Negative pressure wound therapy: draining and closing the wound with vacuum pressure
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: encasing the wound in pure pressurized oxygen
  • Skin grafting: surgical placement of skin from another part of your body onto the wound
  • Skin substitute placement: placing biosynthetic skin substitutes over the wound

The team strives to stay at the forefront of wound healing technology, and they’re dedicated to finding the best way for you to heal.
